Facebook acquires Madrid-based cloud gaming startup PlayGiga for around 78 million euros to enhance its streaming capabilities. The move supports Facebook's broader strategy to grow its gaming business beyond traditional advertising revenue.
Facebook acquires Madrid-based cloud gaming startup PlayGiga for approximately 78 million euros. The startup builds streaming game technology tailored for 5G networks, which helps telecommunications companies reach more mobile gamers. PlayGiga also develops a gaming-as-a-service platform using Intel's Visual Cloud technology to enable streaming game offerings.
This acquisition aligns with Facebook's ongoing efforts to build out its massive gaming business, which currently boasts over 700 million monthly users. By expanding beyond online advertising, Facebook integrates new gaming technologies into its main navigation hub that already features livestreaming services, Instant Games, and gaming community posts.
The PlayGiga purchase follows Facebook's recent acquisition of Beat Games, the creator of the popular VR title Beat Saber. These strategic moves complement Facebook's existing hardware initiatives, including the sale of Oculus Quest and Rift headsets and the recent launch of the virtual reality universe Facebook Horizon.
