Facebook Ends Moments Photo App Due to Low User Engagement

Facebook officially discontinues its Moments photo-sharing app on February 25th due to a lack of regular users. The company continues to struggle with launching successful standalone applications outside of its core platform.

Facebook officially announces the shutdown of its Moments photo app on February 25th due to low user engagement. The company acknowledges that not enough people use the standalone application, prompting the decision to discontinue the service entirely. Users who want to keep their saved photos and videos have until May 2019 to export their content through a dedicated website.

This closure does not completely erase the features that Moments introduces to the social network. A Facebook spokesperson states that the main app continues to offer ways for users to save and share their memories. However, this move effectively ends Facebook's most direct challenge to Google Photos, which provides similar automated features like creating movies from snapshots.

The downfall of Moments highlights a recurring struggle for Facebook as it tries to expand beyond its core services. Standalone apps like Paper, Lifestage, and tbh all experience similar closures in recent years because they fail to attract a steady audience. Most users remain strictly within the main Facebook app or Messenger, showing little interest in downloading additional software from the tech giant.
