Facebook Erases Hundreds of Fake News Accounts Tied to Indonesian Group
Facebook removes over 1,700 accounts and pages linked to the Saracen Group as part of a new regional election integrity initiative. The social media giant continues to struggle with the spread of misinformation across Southeast Asia.
Facebook removes hundreds of Facebook and Instagram accounts connected to an Indonesian organization known as the Saracen Group. The takedown includes 207 Facebook Pages, 800 Facebook accounts, 546 Facebook Groups, and 208 Instagram accounts for engaging in coordinated inauthentic behavior. Approximately 170,000 people follow at least one of the deleted Facebook Pages, while over 65,000 follow the removed Instagram accounts.
This action marks the first major move from Facebook's newly established election integrity team in Singapore. Indonesia, the world's fourth largest country with over 260 million people, currently prepares for elections alongside Southeast Asian neighbors Thailand and the Philippines. Facebook states it simply does not want its services used to manipulate people during these critical voting periods.
Despite this recent intervention, Facebook continues to face significant challenges in managing false information across Asia. The company deals with ongoing criticism over its role in spreading manipulation in Sri Lanka and the Philippines. The most extreme example remains Myanmar, where the United Nations concludes that Facebook plays a key role in escalating religious hatred and fueling real-world violence.
