Facebook Expands Ad Library to Boost Transparency and Catch Misinformation
Facebook launches a comprehensive Ad Library that shows all active ads and inactive political ads, along with detailed Page history. The expansion aims to prevent election interference and allows watchdogs to monitor ad spending across the platform.
Facebook launches a new Ad Library that allows anyone to search for ad spending details, page history, and political messaging. This expansion fulfills the company's promise to increase transparency after its platform faced intense scrutiny for misuse during the 2016 U.S. presidential elections. Users now see all active ads regardless of topic, as well as inactive political and issue ads, making it much easier to track how organizations spend money on the network.
The updated Ad Library displays crucial background information about Pages, including creation dates, name changes, mergers, and management locations. A new Page Transparency tab hosts this information on every profile, while search features offer auto-fill suggestions and track total political ad runs since May 2018. Additionally, Facebook plans to introduce daily, monthly, and quarterly downloadable reports by mid-May to further assist researchers and journalists in monitoring platform activity.
This increased visibility empowers watchdogs to identify misinformation, voter suppression, and polarizing content, though Facebook stops short of archiving all expired non-political ads due to competitive concerns from advertisers. In another exception, legitimate U.S. news publishers escape political ad labels to avoid appearing partisan when promoting their coverage. Facebook also extends these political ad verification rules and labeling requirements across the entire European Union to prevent foreign interference in upcoming elections.
