Facebook expands its photo and video portability tool by adding Dropbox and EU-based cloud storage provider Koofr as new destination options. This update gives Facebook users worldwide a total of three choices for directly transferring their media via encrypted transfers, supplementing the existing Google Photos integration. The tool relies on open-source code from the Data Transfer Project, a collaborative initiative backed by major tech companies including Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Twitter.
To use the transfer feature, users navigate to the 'Your Facebook Information' menu and select the option to transfer a copy of their photos and videos. After re-entering their Facebook password, users choose their preferred destination service and provide the login credentials for that third-party platform to kick off the migration. The system sends notifications through both Facebook and email once the transfer finishes, and the entire process works seamlessly across both desktop and mobile app environments.
Facebook indicates that additional partnership announcements are coming in the coming months, suggesting a broader expansion of supported services. Furthermore, recent comments to the FTC reveal that the company plans to extend the scope of its portability offerings to include other types of content, such as events and meaningful posts. For now, however, the direct, encrypted transfer capability remains strictly limited to photos and videos uploaded to the social network.
