Facebook announces Facebook Horizon, a massive social VR world that arrives on Oculus Quest and Rift platforms in 2020. As the company shifts its focus to this new interconnected experience, it shuts down its previous social apps, Facebook Spaces and Oculus Rooms, on October 25.

In Horizon, users create legless avatars and travel through portals to public hubs like a town square where they can explore, play games, and join community events. The virtual world includes multiplayer experiences such as Wing Strikers, which features aerial dogfights for players to enjoy together.

The platform stands out because it gives everyone the power to build custom worlds and activities from scratch without needing any prior coding experience. To maintain a welcoming atmosphere, Horizon employs human guides called Horizon Locals who help answer questions and assist users, with signups for the upcoming beta currently open.
