A Wall Street Journal investigation reveals that Facebook knowingly hides the negative impacts of its platforms, specifically regarding Instagram's effect on teenage girls. Internal documents show a stark contrast between the company's public reassurances and its private research, highlighting a longstanding PR strategy of denying known issues until external investigators uncover the truth.

Facebook's own internal studies from 2019 to 2021 show that Instagram makes body image issues worse for 32 percent of teenage girls. The research also directly links the platform to increased anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts, with 13 percent of British teens and 6 percent of American teens tracing their suicidal ideation directly back to their Instagram use.

Despite this alarming internal data, Instagram head Adam Mosseri publicly downplays these mental health concerns as quite small.
