Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp are gradually returning to normal after a massive six-hour global outage that affects millions of people across the world. Facebook confirms on Twitter that its apps are coming back online and apologizes to the huge community of people and businesses that depend on its services.

Outage tracking website Downdetector.com reports receiving 10.6 million problem reports from locations ranging from the United States and Europe to Colombia and Singapore. The platform describes the event as the largest outage it has ever seen, with trouble first appearing at approximately 15:45 GMT before services are finally restored several hours later.

Facebook later blames faulty configuration changes on its backbone routers as the root cause of the blackout. These routers coordinate network traffic between the company's data centers, and the resulting disruption serves as a humbling reminder of how much people and organizations rely on these apps every day.
