Facebook Launches Cross-App Payment System to Rival Existing Services
Facebook introduces Facebook Pay, a unified payment system that works across Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp, and the main Facebook app. The feature launches first in the US on Facebook and Messenger.
Facebook introduces Facebook Pay, a new unified payment system that works seamlessly across its family of apps including Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook proper. Users simply add their payment method once and it becomes available across any of the enabled Facebook applications. The rollout begins this week in the United States, though it initially limits availability to Facebook and Messenger.
The system supports most major credit and debit cards along with PayPal integration. Facebook emphasizes that this new payment feature operates completely separately from its ongoing cryptocurrency wallet initiatives. The primary goal is to reduce friction for users, particularly during transactions on Facebook Marketplace where buyers and sellers frequently exchange funds.
Despite the convenience of a unified system, Facebook enters an incredibly crowded market dominated by established players like Venmo, PayPal, Square, Apple Pay, and Google Pay. While Facebook Pay naturally finds a home within the company's own ecosystem, it faces a monumental challenge in convincing users to adopt yet another mobile payment method for everyday peer-to-peer transactions.
