Facebook Plans End-to-End Encryption for Instagram and Messenger
Facebook is integrating its messaging platforms by adding end-to-end encryption to Instagram messages and making it default on Messenger. The move aims to boost user privacy and keep people engaged despite past security scandals.
Facebook is bringing end-to-end encryption to Instagram messages as part of a broader effort to unify its messaging platforms. The company is reworking the infrastructure of Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook Messenger so users can communicate across the networks more easily, even though the apps will remain separate. This change brings a new level of privacy to Instagram users who have never had this protection before.
Currently, only WhatsApp provides end-to-end encryption by default, while Messenger users have to turn the feature on manually. Under the new plan, Messenger will also encrypt chats by default, meaning Facebook will no longer be able to read the content of messages sent across these platforms. A Facebook spokesperson says the goal is to make messaging fast, simple, and private, though the company is not providing a timeline for these changes.
This integration effort comes as Facebook tries to retain its 2.2 billion users amid declining trust following numerous privacy scandals. However, the plan faces uncertainty in Europe, where regulators previously forced Facebook to abandon an attempt to share WhatsApp user data with the main social network. It remains to be seen how authorities will react to this deep technical integration of the company's messaging services.
