Facebook Prioritizes Algorithmic Outrage Over Genuine Free Speech
Mark Zuckerberg claims Facebook defends free expression, but the platform actually provides algorithmic amplification optimized for engagement and outrage rather than equal voice.
Mark Zuckerberg recently gives a speech defending Facebook as a champion of free expression, but this framing ignores the reality of how the platform operates. Facebook does not actually provide free speech, because users do not see an equal, unfiltered stream of what everyone posts. Instead, the experience relies entirely on the News Feed, which is controlled by a complex algorithm that chooses exactly what content reaches each user.
This algorithm deliberately optimizes for engagement, which consistently rewards outrage and sensationalism to keep people on the site longer. By elevating certain posts while burying others, the system acts as a gatekeeper rather than a neutral town square. Zuckerberg essentially grants a massive voice only to those users and posts that the algorithm selects, making the code itself the true power on the platform.
The situation becomes even more problematic when considering Facebook's policy of allowing paid political misinformation to run unchecked. Rejecting a blatantly false political advertisement on any traditional network is standard practice, not an attack on free speech, and the same logic applies to social media. Claiming that allowing algorithmic amplification of lies defends free expression is deeply disingenuous and masks the true nature of the platform's profit-driven design.
