Facebook Smashes Q3 Revenue Expectations as Pandemic Boosts Digital Ads
Facebook reports $21.5 billion in Q3 revenue, easily beating analyst estimates thanks to a pandemic-driven shift to online commerce. The social giant also anticipates strong Q4 growth driven by holiday advertising and Oculus Quest 2 sales.
Facebook reports impressive Q3 2020 earnings with $21.5 billion in revenue and $7.8 billion in net income, easily beating analyst expectations of $19.82 billion in revenue. The social network reaches 1.82 billion daily active users and 2.74 billion monthly active users, showing a 12% increase from the previous year. Despite this strong financial performance, the company's expenses rise 28% as headcount jumps 32%, outpacing its 22% revenue growth.
The company credits the pandemic with accelerating the shift from offline to online commerce, which drives increasing demand for digital advertising. This secular shift gives Facebook a major advantage, mirroring the strong ad market results recently seen by Snap. Facebook anticipates this positive trend to continue, predicting a higher ad revenue growth rate for Q4 2020 compared to the third quarter.
Looking ahead, Facebook expects additional Q4 revenue boosts from strong sales of its new Oculus Quest 2 VR headset. However, the company warns of significant uncertainty for 2021, specifically citing potential regulatory hurdles in Europe regarding transatlantic data transfers. Additionally, Facebook experiences a slight decline in U.S. and Canadian users, dropping to 196 million daily active users from 198 million in the previous quarter.
