Facebook releases Portal and Portal+, two new smart video communication devices designed to make users feel like they are in the same room as their friends and family. The standard Portal features a 10-inch display, while the larger Portal+ boasts a 15-inch pivoting screen that adapts to different viewing angles. Both devices aim to transform traditional video calls into more natural, immersive hangout experiences.
Artificial intelligence drives the core features of these devices through Smart Camera and Smart Sound technologies. The Smart Camera automatically pans, zooms, and follows the action to keep everyone in the frame, while Smart Sound reduces background noise and amplifies the speaker's voice as they move around the room. This intelligent design allows users to cook, move, or chat completely hands-free.
Users connect with their existing network through Facebook and Messenger, meaning they can call contacts on smartphones or tablets even if those people do not own a Portal. The devices support group calls with up to seven participants and offer built-in Amazon Alexa alongside a dedicated "Hey Portal" voice command for starting calls. Both models are available for pre-order in the United States for $199 and $349 respectively, with shipping beginning in November.
