A Google spokesperson confirms to Snopes that these strange outputs, which stem from the AI misinterpreting joke Reddit comments, are entirely authentic. The tool generates these summaries at the top of search results for American users.
However, Google warns that many of the most shocking examples circulating on social media are actually doctored images spreading harmful misinformation. The most notable fake image shows an AI Overview allegedly telling a depressed user to jump off the Golden Gate Bridge. Google states this specific result never exists and that the original poster admits to fabricating the screenshot.
This fabricated image spreads so widely that even the New York Times initially reports it as fact before issuing a correction. Google emphasizes that while it actively addresses the genuine oddities produced by its generative AI tool, the public must remain cautious of fabricated screenshots designed to make the feature look much more dangerous than it actually is.
