FarmWise raises $14.5 million in a new funding round led by Calibrate Ventures to advance its autonomous weeding robot. The vehicle currently exists as a prototype that resembles a large personnel carrier but acts as a precision instrument. It scans the ground to identify invasive weeds among crops and carefully extracts them without harming the produce.
The company reports that a single robot weeds enough crops daily to feed a medium-sized city of about 400,000 people. This new investment follows successful early trials and a previous $5.7 million seed round, bringing the total funding to over $20 million. The rapid progression from a 2017 demo day to a nearly market-ready product shows strong promise in the challenging sector of agricultural automation.
FarmWise plans to use the fresh capital to enhance its proprietary plant-detection technology and expand beyond basic weeding. Future iterations of the robots will act as specialized crop doctors that monitor individual plant health, identify issues like aphids or fungus, and apply targeted interventions. This advanced level of inspection also allows the company to collect valuable agricultural data for future analysis and services.
