Figure reveals a major upgrade for its 01 humanoid robot, allowing it to speak, reason, and perform tasks in real-time thanks to a new partnership with OpenAI.
Figure demonstrates the first major result of its collaboration with OpenAI by showing the Figure 01 humanoid robot engaging in real-time conversations. The robot uses integrated cameras to send visual data to a large vision-language model trained by OpenAI, while simultaneously processing spoken words to understand human requests.
Figure's own neural networks take in images at 10 Hz to help translate all of this incoming information into fast, dexterous physical actions. The company confirms that the robot operates entirely autonomously during the demonstration, requiring no teleoperation and performing all tasks at actual speed.
This breakthrough follows a remarkably rapid development timeline for the startup, which only emerged from stealth last year and already has its robots working on the warehouse floor at BMW. The partnership aims to train a world model capable of operating humanoid robots at a massive scale, and this early success shows significant progress toward that ambitious goal.
