Figure Raises $675M at $2.6B Valuation for Humanoid Robots
Bay Area robotics startup Figure secures a massive $675 million Series B round backed by OpenAI, Microsoft, and Nvidia. The company focuses on building general-purpose humanoid robots for industrial workplaces.
Figure secures a massive $675 million Series B funding round that values the Bay Area robotics startup at $2.6 billion. The impressive investor lineup includes Microsoft, OpenAI Startup Fund, Nvidia, Amazon Industrial Innovation Fund, and Jeff Bezos. This astronomical sum brings the total funding raised by the 80-person company to over $800 million, following founder Brett Adcock's initial $100 million bootstrap and a previous $70 million Series A.
The startup joins a growing wave of companies racing to build functional humanoid robots for industrial use. Figure hits its initial goal of creating a walking bipedal robot within a year of its 2022 launch, placing it alongside competitors like Tesla, Apptronik, and Agility Robotics. These companies focus primarily on workplace applications rather than home use, as industrial environments offer a more practical starting point for integrating bipedal machines into existing workflows.
Despite the massive hype and funding, industry experts urge caution regarding the current capabilities of these systems. Many roboticists estimate that true artificial general intelligence required for fully autonomous, general-purpose robots remains about five years away. While companies like Tesla sometimes set unrealistic expectations for the current state of the art, Figure and its peers continue to push the boundaries of what humanoid machines can accomplish in commercial settings.
