Fintech Unicorn Figure Deploys GPT-4 to Automate and Accelerate Mortgage Lending
Figure, a $3 billion lending startup, introduces a GPT-4 powered tool to eliminate manual document verification in the mortgage process. The new AI system drastically reduces the time needed to catch errors across complex legal paperwork.
Lending startup Figure rolls out a new AI tool powered by GPT-4 to catch errors in home lending documents. The $3 billion fintech company, now led by former Brex COO Michael Tannenbaum, specializes in condensing a traditional 45-day home equity lending process into just five days. This new feature targets tedious "stare and compare" tasks, such as verifying that a property description matches exactly across more than 60 pages of legal paperwork.
Tannenbaum highlights this AI integration as a way to take costs out of complex processes by massively decreasing manual labor. Because loan applications contain highly sensitive personal information, Figure works closely with OpenAI to ensure an ironclad privacy agreement that strictly prevents customer data from being used to train the underlying models. The technology promises to bring unprecedented efficiency to both consumer-facing operations and the company's significant B2B embedded lending partnerships.
Chief Data Officer Ruben Padron emphasizes that Figure builds model-agnostic systems that allow the company to quickly pivot to whatever AI vendor offers the highest performance. The startup tests and evaluates new models on a weekly or even daily basis to stay at the forefront of the technology. Padron sees this initial rollout as just the beginning of a continuous journey to lower costs, eliminate manual work, and reduce human bias in the lending industry.
