First Copilot+ PCs with Snapdragon X Chips Hit Store Shelves
The initial lineup of Copilot+ PCs featuring Qualcomm's Snapdragon X processors is now available, offering dedicated hardware for local AI tasks. Microsoft delays the controversial Recall feature to its Insider Program while releasing these new Windows 11 machines.
The first wave of Copilot+ PCs officially arrives today, marking a major push by Microsoft into AI-integrated computing. These laptops all feature Qualcomm's Arm-based Snapdragon X chipsets, which include a neural processing unit (NPU) capable of at least 40 TOPS of performance. To meet Microsoft's strict requirements, every model in this new category includes a minimum of 16GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, and a dedicated Copilot keyboard button.
These devices run a specialized layer of Windows 11 that integrates dozens of AI models directly into the operating system to handle local generative tasks. Users benefit from on-device tools like automated photo restoration, live video captioning and translation, game graphics upscaling, and instant text summaries. By processing these AI workloads locally rather than relying on cloud data centers, these computers promise faster response times and enhanced privacy.
Despite the broad rollout of the hardware, Microsoft delays the highly anticipated Recall feature due to significant privacy concerns from critics. Recall, which takes periodic snapshots of user activity to create a searchable timeline, now remains exclusive to the Windows Insider Program as the company gathers additional tester feedback. While shoppers buy these powerful new machines today, they wait for a future update to experience the full scope of Microsoft's original AI vision.
