Former Self-Driving Truck Firm TuSimple Rebrands as AI Animation Company CreateAI

TuSimple officially drops its autonomous trucking past to become CreateAI, an AI animation and gaming venture. The dramatic pivot faces heavy shareholder backlash and controversy over the movement of U.S. assets to China.

TuSimple officially completes its transformation from a self-driving truck company to an AI animation and gaming business under the new name CreateAI. This rebrand follows the company's decision to shut down its U.S. autonomous truck operations and delist from the stock market in early 2024. As part of the launch, CreateAI unveils "Ruyi," an open-source image-to-video AI model available on Hugging Face that the company develops in under six months.

The dramatic business pivot sparks significant controversy among shareholders due to the company's plan to move its remaining U.S. assets to China to fund the new venture. Co-founder Mo Chen faces accusations of self-dealing because CreateAI approves a $25 million deal with game development companies previously affiliated with him. Chen transfers his ownership of those companies to a family trust to reduce conflicts of interest, but former CEO Xiaodi Hou actively campaigns to overthrow the board and liquidate the company to return the remaining $450 million cash reserve to stockholders.

Despite having no active autonomous vehicle development program, CreateAI still plans to monetize its existing self-driving intellectual property by licensing the technology to partners in China. The company's newly published business plan explicitly references this strategy for generating revenue from its past innovations. However, the immediate focus remains on the gaming and animation sector, highlighted by the new partnership to develop and distribute the role-playing video game "Heroes of Jin Yong."
