General Motors Enters E-Bike Market with ARĪV Brand

General Motors introduces its new electric bike brand, ARĪV, featuring two connected models named Meld and Merge as the automaker expands into personal mobility.

General Motors officially enters the electric bike market with the launch of its new brand, ARĪV. The automaker introduces two connected models, a compact bike called Meld and a folding version called Merge, as part of a broader strategy to diversify beyond traditional vehicle manufacturing. GM applies its automotive-grade engineering to these e-bikes, utilizing proprietary motor technology developed from the company's extensive experience with electric vehicle software and controls.

Both e-bikes feature a motor that enables speeds up to 25 kph with four levels of pedal-assisted power and a battery that provides a range of 64 kilometers on a single 3.5-hour charge. Safety is a priority for GM, so the bikes come standard with integrated LED lights and oversized brake rotors for improved stopping power. Additionally, the bikes offer connected features through a Bluetooth-enabled app that tracks metrics like speed, distance, and battery level, with a planned algorithmic update designed to help riders arrive at their destination without sweating.

GM targets the European market for this initial launch, specifically focusing on Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands due to the high popularity of e-bikes in these regions. Customers can pre-order the bikes through a dedicated website, with the compact Meld priced lower than the folding Merge. The company schedules the first shipments to reach customers in the second quarter of 2019 as it tests the waters of this new micro-mobility segment.
