German Researchers Achieve First Fully Autonomous Plane Landing

A team at Technical University of Munich successfully lands a small aircraft using only computer vision, completely bypassing traditional ground-based systems.

A team of German researchers at the Technical University of Munich achieves a major aviation milestone by landing a small plane completely autonomously. Unlike existing autoland systems that rely on ground-based radio signals found only at major airports, this new system operates entirely independently of external infrastructure.

The custom-built technology, called C2Land, uses standard visible-light and infrared cameras mounted on the nose of the aircraft to visually locate the runway. Because GPS is too imprecise for landing, the computer vision processor acts as the eyes of the aircraft, recognizing the runway from a great distance and guiding the descent just as a human pilot would.

During a successful test in May, a test pilot acts merely as a passenger and keeps his hands in his lap while the Diamond DA42 aircraft makes a flawless approach and touches down precisely on the centerline. This breakthrough promises to make ordinary landings safer and opens up a new era of truly autonomous flight for smaller aircraft.
