Getty Images officially bans AI-generated art from its stock photo platform due to concerns over unresolved copyright issues. CEO Craig Peters states that this proactive measure helps customers avoid financial and reputational risks associated with the technology. Although the company reports only a limited amount of AI content on its platform, it takes a firm stance against hosting these creations.
The stock photo provider partners with the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity to develop filters that catch AI-produced material. In the meantime, Getty asks its users to flag any artificial images that slip through the cracks. This approach mirrors actions taken by industry rivals like Shutterstock, which already screens some of its imagery for AI generation.
This ban makes logical sense because AI image generators frequently train on copyrighted material, putting Getty and its clients at risk of legal repercussions for profiting from stolen art. While users can still currently find some AI-made pictures on the platform, the company shows no signs of reversing its policy unless AI developers guarantee their tools produce completely legal images.
