GitHub Grants Enterprise Cloud Customers EU Data Residency Option

GitHub gives enterprise cloud customers the ability to store their code data in the European Union starting October 29. This change addresses strict regulatory requirements and customer expectations regarding data protection in sensitive sectors like finance and healthcare. The platform uses Microsoft Azure cloud regions located in the Netherlands and Sweden to host this localized information.
This new feature extends data location controls that previously only exist for GitHub's self-hosted enterprise server product to its cloud users. Currently, all GitHub Enterprise Cloud customer data resides in the United States. Early adopters of this EU data residency program include German manufacturer Zeiss and Volkswagen's software subsidiary Cariad.
The announcement reflects a broader trend of US technology companies adapting to Europe's growing digital sovereignty agenda. Firms like Microsoft, Amazon, Google, and Zoom are all taking similar steps to localize data and offer greater control to European users. GitHub indicates that additional geographic regions will follow the EU rollout in the near future.
