GitHub announces a free version of its Copilot AI coding assistant, making the tool accessible to all developers instead of just paid subscribers and students. The tool now ships by default with Microsoft's VS Code editor as GitHub's developer base grows to 150 million users. CEO Thomas Dohmke states this move aligns with GitHub's history of offering free core features like private repositories and Codespaces.
The free tier targets occasional users rather than professionals working on large projects. Developers receive 2,000 code completions per month, with every suggested snippet counting toward the limit whether accepted or not. The plan also restricts AI model selection to Anthropic's Claude 3.5 Sonnet and OpenAI's GPT-4o, excluding the additional models available in paid tiers.
Despite these boundaries, free users retain full access to Copilot Extensions and skills. The chat feature allows up to 50 messages per month to assist with basic coding questions. Dohmke explains that GitHub determines these thresholds by analyzing past usage data to distinguish casual hobbyists from full-time programmers who still need the robust capabilities of the premium plans.
