GitHub officially releases its Copilot AI programming assistant to the public after a year-long free technical preview. The tool helps developers write code by suggesting entire lines or functions based on the context of their work.
Most developers now have to pay to use the software, with previous free testers seeing their access replaced by a prompt to start a 60-day free trial. Once this trial period ends, the subscription costs $10 per month or $100 per year.
There are a few exceptions to the new paid model, as verified students and maintainers of popular open-source projects continue to receive free access. Enterprise-managed accounts are not yet supported at launch.
