Google AI Overviews Now Appear in 43% of Searches as Traditional Links Fade

Google's AI Overviews now appear in 43% of searches, up dramatically from just 15% a year ago, according to new data from market intelligence firm Similarweb. The surge signals a fundamental transformation in how people consume information online, as Google evolves from a simple directory of blue links into a destination where users get answers directly without ever leaving the platform.

AI Mode visits reflect this shift, skyrocketing from 126 million in June 2025 to 279 million by May 2026. Users increasingly replace short keyword queries with longer, conversational phrases designed for AI interaction. Google now drops users into AI Overviews where they continue research through its conversational AI Mode, keeping people on Google's platform longer rather than directing them outward to other websites.

Publishers continue to suffer from declining referral traffic as AI citations rarely lead to clicks, a trend Similarweb identifies as particularly devastating for news organizations. While citations within AI responses grow more than fivefold over the past year, adoption remains uneven across platforms. Some hope emerges as infrastructure company Cloudflare introduces tools letting publishers block AI crawlers unless companies pay for content access through its marketplace.
