Google partners with Muon Space, the Earth Fire Alliance, and other organizations to launch FireSat, a new satellite constellation dedicated to detecting wildfires across the globe. This network relies on specially co-developed infrared sensors to constantly scan the Earth's surface for telltale heat signatures. Once the sensors spot a potential fire, they instantly feed the data into Google's artificial intelligence models for rapid verification.
Current fire agencies face a difficult trade-off where they either receive high-resolution satellite imagery infrequently or low-resolution imagery quickly. FireSat eliminates this compromise by providing detailed updates to authorities every 20 minutes. The system is sensitive enough to identify blazes as small as five square meters, which allows firefighters to respond and extinguish flames before they grow into devastating forest fires.
The first FireSat satellite launches in early 2025, with approximately 50 additional satellites scheduled to join the constellation over the next few years. As the network expands, it provides a continuous, reliable safety net that protects vulnerable forests and communities from sudden wildfire disasters.
