Google and Twitter Adopt AMD EPYC Rome Chips to Rival Intel in Data Centers

Google and Twitter adopt AMD's new 7nm EPYC Rome processors in their data centers, AMD announces today. This move marks a significant step in AMD's ongoing processor war against Intel, which delays its own 7nm chips until 2021. Despite Intel's continued dominance in the data center market, AMD quickly becomes a formidable rival by offering competitive performance at lower prices.

Google acts as the first company to integrate these second-generation EPYC chips into its data centers, building on a history of using AMD hardware. Later this year, Google plans to offer virtual machines powered by these processors to its Google Cloud customers. A Google executive states that the scalable compute and memory performance of the chips expand the company's ability to innovate and give customers better workload flexibility.

Twitter also plans to implement the EPYC Rome processors later this year to improve the efficiency of its infrastructure. Twitter's engineering leadership notes that the chips allow the social network to scale compute clusters with more cores in less space while using less power, resulting in a 25 percent lower total cost of ownership. AMD claims its flagship 64-core chip delivers up to 50 percent cost savings across numerous workloads compared to competing Intel processors.
