Google introduces six new voices for its Google Assistant, utilizing artificial intelligence to make the digital helper sound more like a human. The tech giant teams up with its AI subsidiary DeepMind to deploy a system called WaveNet, which generates computerized voices that closely mimic human speech patterns. Rather than replacing human voice actors entirely, Google uses this technology to augment their recordings so the Assistant answers more questions without requiring actors to record every single response.
Demonstrations at the conference show that these new male and female voices maintain a natural conversational cadence without abrupt stops at the end of sentences. Additionally, Google announces that musician John Legend records his voice for the Assistant, with the WaveNet technology expanding his responses far beyond his actual studio time, launching later this year.
