Google Cloud launches the Bare Metal Solution, a fully managed service that allows enterprises to run specialized workloads on certified hardware located directly inside Google Cloud data centers. Unlike standard cloud servers, this setup focuses on applications that require specific hardware certifications, with Oracle Database serving as the primary use case. Google handles all the physical infrastructure, including servers, power, cooling, and support contracts, while the customer retains full control over the deployed software.
This offering acts as a strategic bridge for companies that struggle to migrate their legacy systems directly to the cloud. By co-locating these specialized workloads within its own facilities, Google enables businesses to connect their existing databases to modern cloud services like machine learning tools with minimal latency. This approach helps enterprises modernize their overall technology infrastructure while protecting their existing software investments and avoiding complicated licensing issues.
The hardware options for this solution are robust, ranging from dual-socket 16-core systems with 384 GB of RAM to powerful quad-socket servers featuring 112 cores and 3072 GB of RAM. Because the bare metal servers reside in the same facility as Google Cloud, businesses benefit from zero ingress and egress charges when moving data between the two environments in the same region. Pricing operates on a monthly subscription basis, with Google recommending a 36-month term for this non-self-provisioned enterprise service.
