Google Counters AI Browser Rivals With Deep Gemini Chrome Integration

Google is upgrading Chrome with a persistent Gemini sidebar, personal data connections, and an auto-browse agent to compete with emerging AI browsers.

Google responds to a wave of new AI browsers by deeply integrating its Gemini assistant directly into Chrome. Instead of a floating window, Gemini now lives in a persistent sidebar where users ask questions about the current website or group related tabs together for tasks like comparing product prices. This upgrade also expands to Chromebook Plus users after previously being limited to Windows and macOS.

The updated browser connects to Google's new personal intelligence feature, which pulls context from Gmail, Search, YouTube, and Google Photos. This integration allows users to check their family schedule or draft and send emails without ever leaving the current tab. Additionally, a new Nano Banana feature enables users to modify existing images using other products or pictures they discover while browsing the web.

The most ambitious addition is an "auto-browse" agentic feature that navigates websites and completes tasks like finding coupons and purchasing items on the user's behalf. The agent handles the heavy lifting but pauses to ask for human intervention during sensitive steps like logging in or finalizing a payment, keeping passwords and card details securely within Chrome's manager. This autonomous browsing tool rolls out initially to AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the U.S.
