Google DeepMind Undergoes Major Leadership Shake-Up as Hassabis Steps Into New Role
Google announces a significant restructuring of its AI leadership, headlined by Demis Hassabis stepping down from his role leading Google DeepMind. Hassabis transitions to become the chair of Google DeepMind and the chief scientist at Alphabet, where he continues to oversee Isomorphic Labs, the company's AI-driven drug discovery arm. Koray Kavukcuoglu, previously DeepMind's CTO, steps up as the new SVP of DeepMind and reports directly to CEO Sundar Pichai.
Hassabis emphasizes his commitment to advancing AI in healthcare, stating that the technology needs to prove its value by tackling diseases like cancer. In his new position, he plans to continue advising Pichai on strategic AGI matters while supporting Kavukcuoglu and other DeepMind leaders. The shift signals Google's intent to leverage Hassabis's expertise at a broader, company-wide level across Alphabet.
The shakeup also marks the departure of Jeff Dean, Google DeepMind's chief scientist and one of Google's earliest employees. Dean leaves alongside Google Fellow Sanjay Ghemawat to launch Discovery Loop, a new AI-focused public benefit corporation. Google confirms it serves as a founding investor in the venture, underscoring the company's ongoing support for AI innovation even as long-time leaders pursue independent projects.
