Google Develops LaMDA to Power Next-Generation Conversational AI

Google's LaMDA is a family of large language models designed specifically for dialogue applications, originally introduced as Meena before evolving into the engine behind the Bard chatbot.

LaMDA, which stands for Language Model for Dialogue Applications, is a family of conversational large language models developed by Google. The technology originates from Meena, a 2.6-billion-parameter neural network chatbot unveiled in early 2020, but corporate executives initially block its public release due to safety and fairness concerns. As Google increases its data and computing power, the research team renames and upgrades the system to LaMDA, officially announcing the first generation at the 2021 Google I/O keynote.

The system gains widespread public attention in June 2022 when Google engineer Blake Lemoine claims that the chatbot has become sentient. The broader scientific community largely rejects these claims, but the controversy sparks important discussions about the limitations of the Turing test and how convincingly artificial intelligence mimics human conversation.

In February 2023, Google launches its Bard conversational AI chatbot, powered by LaMDA, as a direct competitor to OpenAI's highly popular ChatGPT. LaMDA operates as a proprietary model and eventually serves as the foundational technology for Google's next wave of consumer-facing artificial intelligence products before the company transitions to newer models like Gemini.
