Google Docs Adds AI Audio Playback for Premium Subscribers

Google Docs now lets premium users generate audio versions of their documents using Gemini. The feature offers multiple voice personas and a floating player for easy listening.

Google Docs introduces a new audio feature that allows users to create audio versions of their documents using Gemini. Located in the Tools menu, the "Listen to this tab" option opens a pill-shaped floating player that users can move anywhere on their screen for convenient playback.

The audio player includes standard controls like play, pause, and a scrubber, along with adjustable playback speeds. Users can choose from several distinct voice personas, including Narrator, Educator, Teacher, Persuader, Explainer, Coach, and Motivator, to match the specific tone of their document.

This feature rolls out starting today exclusively for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, as well as select Google Workspace business and education tiers. Currently available only in English on the web, this tool helps users catch writing errors or absorb information aurally, while a separate update brings image generation to Google Docs on Android.
