Google Dominates Cloud Native Open Source Contributions, Data Shows
New data from Stackalytics reveals that Google accounts for over half of all code commits to CNCF projects, maintaining its lead even without Kubernetes.
Recent data from Stackalytics shows that Google dominates the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) open-source ecosystem by contributing nearly 53 percent of all code commits. Red Hat trails far behind in second place with only 7.4 percent of the total contributions to these critical cloud projects.
While Google originally created and donated Kubernetes to the CNCF, the tech giant remains the top contributor even when removing Kubernetes from the equation. This extended lead comes from heavy involvement in other projects like the GRPC queuing system and Vitess, a database clustering tool originally built for YouTube.
The data highlights that most CNCF projects rely heavily on a single corporate vendor, with Prometheus being the rare exception that relies mostly on independent developers. Google defends its massive footprint by emphasizing its long-standing commitment to open source and its continuous dedication of engineering expertise, compute resources, and project management to the community.
