Google Drastically Reduces AI Overview Summaries in Search Results
Google significantly scales back its AI Overview feature in search results, dropping from an 84% appearance rate in May to just 7% by July. This reduction follows highly publicized errors where the AI provided bizarre and unsafe advice to users.
Google significantly reduces the presence of its AI Overview feature in search results, dropping from an 84% appearance rate at its May launch to just 7% by July. This AI summary tool, which is part of Google's Search Generative Experience (SGE), generates automated answers at the top of the page but only appears when Google chooses to display it, typically for question-based queries.
The sharp decline in AI Overview visibility follows several high-profile errors where the technology provides bizarre and potentially dangerous advice. Viral social media screenshots highlight absurd suggestions, such as recommending that people eat small rocks daily for vitamins or add non-toxic glue to pizza sauce to improve cheese texture.
Unlike Google's highly restricted approach, Microsoft's Bing displays AI-generated summaries much more frequently through its CoPilot feature. As Google continues to tweak its algorithm and reduce the frequency of these automated overviews, users see a much more conservative rollout of generative AI in everyday search results.
