Google Duplex AI Updates 3 Million Business Listings During Pandemic

Google reveals that its Duplex AI successfully updates over 3 million business listings across eight countries since the pandemic began. The system now handles 99% of its calls entirely automatically.

Google provides an update on Duplex, its conversational AI technology that performs tasks like making reservations and updating business information. Since the pandemic begins, the system updates over 3 million business listings across eight countries to reflect changes at pharmacies, restaurants, and grocery stores. Users view these critical updates over 20 billion times across Google Maps and Search.

The AI, which places natural-sounding phone calls complete with human-like pauses and verbal cues, completes over a million bookings through Google Assistant. Google also expands Duplex to the web to help users book movie tickets and rental cars, and now pilots the technology for faster checkout experiences in online shopping and food ordering.

Advances in neural speech recognition and new language models allow 99% of Duplex calls to operate entirely without human intervention. Additionally, Google recently introduces a "Hold for Me" feature that uses Duplex technology to wait on hold during phone calls, alerting the user only when a real person joins the line.
