Google Duplex Relies Heavily on Human Operators During Real-World Calls

Despite its impressive AI demonstration, Google reveals that a significant portion of Duplex reservation calls are initiated or completed by human operators.

Google reveals that its impressive Duplex AI booking system frequently relies on human operators to complete real-world restaurant reservations. Approximately 25 percent of these calls start with a live human voice rather than an artificial intelligence.

For the calls that actually begin with the AI system, about 15 percent require a human to step in and take over the conversation. Google notes that this human safety net is an expected part of the real-world testing process as the company works to improve the technology on both iOS and Android devices.

While the system occasionally manages to fool listeners during simple, successful bookings, it still requires a massive amount of data to improve. This heavy reliance on human help highlights the significant gap between Google's highly polished stage demonstrations and the current reality of deploying AI in unpredictable real-world environments.
