Google Enables Automatic Passkey Syncing Across Devices via Password Manager
Google now allows Chrome users to automatically sync passkeys across devices using Google Password Manager. The company also introduces a new PIN feature for added security during the setup process.
Google makes passkeys more convenient by enabling automatic syncing through Google Password Manager for Chrome users on Windows, macOS, and Linux. This update ensures that digital credentials seamlessly transfer across all signed-in devices without requiring manual transfers. Android users also receive this automatic syncing capability immediately, while iOS support is scheduled to arrive soon.
To enhance security during this transition, Google introduces a PIN protection feature for Password Manager. Users must enter either a six-digit or a longer alphanumeric PIN, or their Android screen lock code, when setting up passkeys on a new device. These recovery factors securely unlock saved passkeys and allow new credentials to sync across computers and Android devices.
This rollout aligns with a significant surge in passkey adoption across the tech industry. According to the FIDO Alliance, over half of consumers now use passkeys on at least one account, and 20% of the world's top 100 websites support the technology. Google continues to champion this password-free future, having made passkeys the default sign-in method last year and recently integrating them into its Advanced Protection Program for high-risk users.
