Google Expands AI Search Features With New AI Mode and Deeper Reasoning
Google is rolling out a new AI Mode in Search that offers advanced reasoning and multimodal capabilities without requiring a Labs sign-up. The expansion builds on the success of AI Overviews, which drives a ten percent increase in search usage in major markets.
Google is expanding its AI-powered search experience with the official rollout of AI Mode in the United States. This new feature provides power users with an end-to-end AI search experience that includes advanced reasoning, multimodal capabilities, and the ability to ask follow-up questions. Users access AI Mode through a dedicated new tab in Search and within the search bar of the Google app.
The release builds on the massive success of AI Overviews, which Google reports as one of the most successful Search launches in the past decade. In major markets like the U.S. and India, AI Overviews drives over a ten percent increase in search usage for eligible queries. Google notes that once people use AI Overviews, they return to perform more complex searches, and this growth continues to accelerate over time.
AI Mode operates using a query fan-out technique that breaks down complex questions into smaller subtopics and runs multiple searches simultaneously. By shifting from simply providing information to delivering actual intelligence, Google aims to handle longer, more complex, and multimodal questions. Additional upcoming capabilities showcased at Google I/O include Deep Search, live capabilities, agentic features, and personalized shopping tools.
