Google Halts Ad Revenue for Russian State Media Amid Ukraine Invasion
Google pauses monetization for Russian state-funded media across all its platforms in response to the war in Ukraine. The tech giant follows similar restrictions recently implemented by its subsidiary YouTube and Facebook.
Google prevents Russian state-funded media from earning money across its platforms as a direct response to Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. A company spokesperson confirms that the tech giant pauses all Google monetization for these outlets and promises to take further steps if necessary.
This main decision comes just hours after YouTube, which Google owns, blocks specific Russian channels from monetizing their videos globally. YouTube targets the state-funded network RT and restricts the platform's recommendations of these channels while actively promoting authoritative news content in related search results.
Facebook implements a nearly identical ban on Russian state media running ads or earning money on its platform. These collective actions by major U.S. tech companies align with broad international sanctions against Russian businesses and officials, while YouTube simultaneously removes hundreds of channels for coordinated deceptive practices and disinformation.
