Google Home Opens Smart Homes to Third-Party AI Agents via MCP
Google is opening its smart home platform to third-party AI agents through a new integration based on the Model Context Protocol (MCP). The feature allows any MCP-compatible agent, including Claude, Open Claw, Google Antigravity, and Hermes, to securely access devices and event history in a user's Google Home ecosystem.
With the integration, AI agents can do more than simple voice commands. They can analyze home data, monitor device activity, control connected gadgets, and even build custom dashboards tailored to how a household operates. Taylor Lehman, group product manager at Google Home & Nest, says the goal is to let agents act on a user's behalf across the entire smart home.
The move signals a broader shift in the smart home industry, where standardized protocols like MCP position AI agents as the primary interface for managing connected devices. As companies race to build agent-driven experiences, Google's approach could define how deeply AI assistants integrate into daily home automation.
