Google Launches AI-Powered Search Generative Experience for Labs Users
Google introduces its new Search Generative Experience (SGE) which replaces traditional blue links with AI snapshots for complex queries. The experimental feature uses advanced language models to provide objective, multi-source summaries.
Google rolls out its Search Generative Experience (SGE) to users enrolled in the Search Labs program, bringing AI-powered capabilities to everyday queries. Instead of the traditional ten blue links, this new interface generates an AI snapshot that appears directly below the search bar on a distinct colored background to answer longer, multi-step questions.
The SGE leverages Google's advanced large language models, including MUM and PaLM2, to synthesize information from multiple websites into a single objective summary. Google intentionally designs these responses to lack a personal persona or first-person perspective, and it withholds generating an AI snapshot entirely whenever it lacks sufficient information or confidence in the topic.
This new search experience includes interactive features that allow users to dive deeper into the results. On desktop, links to source websites appear to the right of the snapshot, while mobile users see a carousel format, and a dedicated button in the top-right corner reveals how the AI corroborates information on a sentence-by-sentence basis.
