Google introduces a new feature called Guided Learning within Gemini just ahead of the upcoming school year. This tool acts as an AI tutor to help users build a deep understanding of topics instead of simply handing them direct answers. The launch comes just over a week after OpenAI rolls out a similar feature called Study Mode for ChatGPT, highlighting a direct competition between the two tech giants in the educational space.
With Guided Learning, Gemini breaks down problems step-by-step and adapts explanations to fit individual user needs. The feature utilizes images, diagrams, videos, and interactive quizzes to help users build and test their knowledge. Google states that this approach helps students uncover the "why" and "how" behind complex concepts, serving as a collaborative thinking partner for exam preparation, essay drafting, and personal interests.
Beyond the new tutoring feature, Google updates Gemini to automatically incorporate visual aids and YouTube videos into its regular responses. Users also gain the ability to ask Gemini to generate flashcards and study guides based on their quiz results or class materials. Additionally, Google offers students in the U.S., Japan, Indonesia, Korea, and Brazil a free one-year subscription to the AI Pro plan, which includes expanded access to Gemini 2.5 Pro, NotebookLM, and Veo 3.
