Google Lays Off Over 1,000 Employees Amid Major Hardware and Assistant Restructuring
Google eliminates over 1,000 roles across its hardware, voice assistant, and AR divisions while Fitbit co-founders exit the company. The Alphabet Workers Union criticizes the cuts as needless given the tech giant's massive quarterly profits.
Google cuts over 1,000 jobs across multiple divisions as part of a major organizational restructuring. The layoffs affect the voice-activated Google Assistant team, the Devices and Services group that manages Pixel, Nest, and Fitbit hardware, and the majority of the augmented reality hardware team. A Google spokesperson states that these role eliminations help the company become more efficient and align resources with its biggest product priorities.
The restructuring causes significant leadership changes, most notably the departure of Fitbit co-founders James Park and Eric Friedman. Following these cuts, Google consolidates its hardware engineering efforts into one core team rather than maintaining separate groups for Pixel, Fitbit, and Nest products. Additionally, the company shifts its augmented reality strategy away from internal hardware development to focus on partnering with original equipment manufacturers.
The Alphabet Workers Union strongly condemns the job cuts and calls them completely needless. The union argues that Google cannot continue to fire hardworking coworkers while generating billions of dollars in profit every quarter. These layoffs occur as Google actively attempts to infuse new AI-powered features into its remaining products through integrations with its Bard technology.
