Astrophysicists point out on social media that the first image of an exoplanet actually occurs in 2004, long before the James Webb Space Telescope launches. NASA confirms this fact, showing that the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope captures that historic image nearly two decades prior.
This public blunder causes Alphabet, Google's parent company, to see its shares plummet by 7.7 per cent on Wednesday. The severe stock drop wipes out over US$100 billion in market value, marking the worst decline for the tech giant in over three months.
