Google brings a major AI upgrade to Google Photos by making premium editing tools free for all users. Features like Magic Editor, Magic Eraser, Photo Unblur, and Portrait Light are no longer restricted to Pixel devices or paid Google One subscribers. This strategic shift allows anyone to access advanced photo manipulation capabilities as AI editing tools rapidly flood the tech market.
The rollout begins on May 15 and takes several weeks to reach all users, with specific hardware and software requirements in place. Mobile users need Android 8.0 or iOS 15 and above, while ChromeOS users require a Chromebook Plus or at least 3GB of RAM. These system specifications ensure that devices possess the necessary processing power to handle the machine learning algorithms behind the editing features.
Magic Editor stands out as the most impressive tool in this release, using generative AI to perform complex edits like changing skies, repositioning subjects, and filling in gaps. While all Pixel users receive unlimited access to this feature, iOS and Android users get a limit of 10 Magic Editor saves per month. Users who want unlimited generative edits still need to upgrade to a Premium Google One plan with 2TB of storage or more.
