Google Maps is testing an augmented reality mode that projects large arrows and signage directly onto your phone's camera view to eliminate the common problem of walking in the wrong direction. By comparing live camera footage with Google's massive Street View database, the feature accurately determines your exact location and orientation even when GPS signals or compasses fail in crowded urban environments.

The development team spends significant time refining the user interface to ensure the tool is intuitive and safe. Early prototypes that drew lines on the ground caused pedestrians to walk directly on top of them, while floating particle effects confused users who mistook them for floating trash. Because holding a phone up while walking is inherently unsafe, the app actively encourages users to lower their devices after just a few seconds of viewing the AR overlays.

Activating the feature feels identical to starting a standard walking route, requiring users to simply tap a new "Start AR" button instead of the usual "Start" prompt. The application then asks the user to point the camera at nearby buildings, scanning for recognizable features and landmarks to pinpoint the starting position before smoothly fading in the helpful directional arrows.
