Google Maps Integrates Gemini AI for Smarter Discovery and Navigation
Google is bringing its Gemini AI model to Google Maps to help users discover new places and ask specific questions about locations. The update also includes enhanced driving navigation features to guide motorists through complex intersections.
Google integrates its Gemini artificial intelligence model into Google Maps to help users in the United States discover new places and answer questions about locations. People can now ask the app open-ended questions like "things to do with friends at night" to receive curated recommendations such as speakeasies or live music venues. Users can also ask follow-up questions about specific recommendations, like whether a restaurant offers outdoor seating, and read AI-generated summaries of customer reviews.
The tech giant is also rolling out enhanced navigation features to make driving in unfamiliar areas much easier. Google Maps now clearly displays lanes, crosswalks, and road signs on the screen, and explicitly highlights the exact lane drivers need to be in to avoid last-second merges. Additionally, users can see weather-related disruptions on the road, allowing them to both view and report issues like flooded streets, unplowed snow, or low-visibility conditions.
Beyond active navigation, the app improves the overall journey by showing landmarks, attractions, and dining options along a route before a trip begins. Once drivers arrive at their destination, Google Maps highlights nearby parking lots and prompts them to save their parking spot so they do not forget where they left their car. From there, the app provides walking directions to the final entrance and gives users the option to launch Street View or augmented reality navigation to guide them the rest of the way.
